The Gate was established in 1989 by Michael and Adrian Daniel, 2 brothers with no formal training who knew nothing about running a restaurant, they just knew what they liked to eat and that food should be celebrated. They opened their first restaurant in Hammersmith, then in Islington while they were refurbishing their first restaurant and most recently in Marylebone in December 2016.
At The Gate we’ve been trying to change people’s perception of vegetarian and vegan food for nearly 3 decades by creating inspirational healthy food. We believe in creative food made with fresh, seasonal ingredients sourced from local/regional suppliers. We also believe that in order to grow you have to give. We have a huge passion for our environment, health, community and supporting charities. We work closely with Ambitious About Autism and we’ve been named the UK’s first autism-friendly restaurant.We know it feels good to be part of the bigger picture and we want everyone to feel like they’re contributing by either working with us or visiting as a customer.
The original Gate in Hammersmith quickly became a go-to destination for vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike and its reputation grew. Now widely recognised as one of the best vegan/vegetarian restaurants in London, the UK and with accolades from around the world, The Gate is both a much-loved institution with a loyal and devoted following and a restaurant which has been quietly and confidently promoting healthy-eating for almost three decades.The Gate has won numerous awards and accolades including a 3* Sustainability rating from the Sustainable Restaurant Association, No. 1 position in the Top 10 vegetarian restaurants in the world as chosen by Epicurious and was named “the jewel in the crown” of vegetarian restaurants in London by Conde Nast Traveller. The Gate Islington was named the first Autism-Friendly restaurant in the UK.
